Texas Photo Round-up: Somewhere in Central Texas

This week I’m sharing some photos which I think look great. I can’t tell you exactly where they are from other than probably somewhere in Bastrop or surrounding Central Texas counties. Robert likes to get up early and go on photo excursions while the morning light is perfect and the likelihood of catching a good sunrise photo is ideal. This particular day he got up around 5am and went adventuring. I kept right on sleeping! But when he came back I was disappointed I had missed this misty morning bridge overlook.

Texas Photo Round-Up: Zilker Park Botanical Garden, Austin, Texas

We’re sharing some Texas photos again this week, in conjunction with the Wandering Off blog’s Texas Photo Round-Up. Sarah V. shares her photos of the Bandera General Store which we’ve been meaning to visit. And Linda over at Travels With Children shared a photo of the Christmas Pyramid in Fredericksburg. We saw it this year too, and agree – it’s definitely big!

Zilker Park is an oasis in downtown Austin – filled with green spaces for sports, picnics, lounging and playing with the dog. It’s a great open space for the city. Inside the park is the Botanical Garden – 31 acres of planned gardens with themes ranging from Asian to a prehistoric dinosaur garden. There is also a butterfly garden, rose garden and several others to enjoy. The garden is free all year, but there is a $3 parking fee from March through early September. It is absolutely worth a visit if you are in Austin!

Texas Photo Round-Up: Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas

We decided to share some of our favorite photos from the Dallas Museum of Art for the Texas Photo Round-Up today. It’s the first Tuesday of the month, so the museum is full of great kid and family activities as part of the monthly First Tuesday offerings. We prefer Late Nights at the museum since we don’t have kids to enjoy the kids programs with but, the museum always has great activities planned, no matter what your age group, so, check it out!

Texas Photo Round-Up – Clark Library, Lockhart, Texas

We’re jumping in to the Texas Photo Round-Up again this week, joining Sarah from the Wandering Off blog. She’s taking a look at Mission San Jose this week. Our recent trip to Central Texas left us with a pile of great photos that don’t really go with any particular posts. One such group, is the Clark Library in downtown Lockhart, Texas. The library was built in 1899 and is still in use today. We found it decked out in holiday lights and couldn’t resist a little photo shoot!

If you follow along on our map when we travel, you will often see county courthouses popping up in the photos. We decided recently that we wanted to set a goal to visit and photograph every county courthouse in Texas. There are 254, so it’s no small goal – it will probably take us a year or two. Of course, in our most recent trip we added 10 counties to our list, so it can be done.

This is separate from Robert’s goal to photograph all 50 state capitol buildings. He is usually drawn to small, county courthouses when he has a camera in hand though, so it seemed like a natural fit.

Do you have any photography goals like this? Maybe you take photos of birds or tree leaves. Or you love to photography textures. What is it that you find over and over again in your photo files? We challenge you – whether you are a writer, blogger, or just plain traveler – to give yourself some photo goals in 2010. It could be to try taking photos from a different angle. Or to capture every independent coffee shop you visit. It could be to find the color blue. Whatever it is, go do it! And let us know what it is so we can all encourage each other along the way.

Texas Photo Round-Up: Fort Richardson State Park, Jacksboro

Fort Richardson State Park in Jacksboro is one of those good state parks with nice campsites, hiking and geocaching opportunities and some great history. The photo opportunities are pretty impressive too – the large stone hospital practically glows in the light of the setting sun. If you like taking pictures at all and you stumble upon it sunset you will find yourself with hundreds of photos. Here are some of ours, to join Sarah at the Wandering Off blog, and others in the Texas Photo Round-up for Twitter’s #traveltuesday.

Along with interesting history, Fort Richardson State Park is full of unique natural beauty, and big sky vistas as well.

Texas Photo Round-Up: Holidays in Gruene

Last week on our whirlwind tour of the Hill Country we had time to stop in Gruene for an evening. It was absolutely adorable all lit up for Christmas. Fun, relaxed and not taking itself to seriously, Gruene is definitely worth a visit. We’ll be posting more about ours later this week, but I wanted to get in a cute photo for the Wandering Off Texas Photo Round-Up. Sarah posted a photo of the Christmas pyramid in Fredericksburg which we also saw last week. Here’s are some of the best from Gruene – mainly from inside the Gruene Antique Company.
