Ever wondered if you could cook a turkey while out camping? For Thanksgiving this year, that is what Chris and I did – prepared our whole Thanksgiving meal over the fire in our camp site including turkey in a dutch oven. We love camping and camp cooking so we could not think of a better excuse to get out all the camp cooking gear and prepare a meal over the fire.
Video podcast #3 – cooking Thanksgiving dinner Cowboy style, in a dutch oven.
Our Thanksgiving menu:
Herb roasted turkey breast
We adapted this recipe and used chopped cilantro, sage, onion, and lemon zest to stuff two turkey breasts. Cooked in at 12 inch dutch oven at about 350 (16 coals on top, 8 coals on the bottom) for about 45 minutes.
Apple and onion stuffing
Here’s another recipe adaptation.
Dutch oven biscuits
Traditional biscuits cooked in a dutch oven
Roasted sweet potatoes and parsnips
Foil pouch of diced sweet potatoes and parsnips thrown into the fire to roast
Cowboy beans
Seasoned with sauteed onions, roasted poblano peppers, tomatoes and a ham hock
Handheld apple pie
Baked over the fire in a camp cooker
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
