Walking around New Orleans on a blazing hot Sunday morning in June I alternated between getting it and wondering what the fuss was all about. The French Quarter was beautiful, the beignets at Cafe Du Monde were good – even if the tables were dirty – and Jackson Square was indeed surrounded by artists. I enjoyed walking through the French Market and seeing what everyone had for sale though I was disappointed that it was more like a flea market than unique New Orleans items.
But then, the music started up nearby. The Storyville Stompers were wandering around the French Quarter, playing for the Sunday morning visitors (there weren’t a whole lot of us). I was fascinated. Billed as a Dixieland Jazz Brass Band there was a thumping beat from the tuba and drums and a great upbeat tempo to the music. My feet were tapping instantly. Being shy and reserved, I didn’t get my groove on quite as much as some of the folks around me. There is more to tell about our trip, but this band and this song will always stand out in my memories of New Orleans.

Never know ice or snow,
Why don’t you go
down to New Orleans.
Ride in a streetcar,
celebrate the Mardi Gras,
Why don’t you go
down to New Orleans…”
